Programme for the Day

First of all we will visit The Fry Gallery to examine Sheila’s finished prints.
I would like this workshop to be as much about looking as doing.
At the studio space I will demonstrate and show examples of simple cardboard cut.
In this workshop I want people to work thoughtfully to make a single image which explores texture using a limited colour palette.
We will provide a few simple objects as a starting point for your image but please bring your own drawings and sketch books too so that we can talk through ideas and adapt the technique to your own style .The technique involves cutting and tearing so bring your own Stanley knife (with a new blade).
Coffee and tea will be provided but please bring your own packed lunch or be prepared to forage in Saffron Walden.
We will make the block before lunch painting it with diluted PVA for protection then print the block in the afternoon using water-based printing inks and Japanese paper .We will be printing by hand without a press.
Wear an apron and old clothes. The ink is washable but may stain.
At the end of the day we will share our progress and thoughts with the group.
