Watercolour on paper, 1942

One of the highlights of the forthcoming exhibition ‘Great Bardfield and beyond: a working landscape’ is Eric Ravilious’s 1942 watercolour of the iron footbridge over the river Pant at Ewenbridge, near Shalford. The successor to the bridge still stands, across the field from the old farmhouse that Eric rented in the early 1940s with his wife Tirzah Garwood and their young children. The picture typifies the deep impression that the agricultural industry and landscape of North West Essex had on the artists that settled there. Come and see this alongside many other works by Ravilious, Bawden, and the other North West Essex artists, at the exhibition which runs from Sunday 7th April until Sunday 27th October 2024, in the main gallery at the Fry.
