Ballymoss (1954 – 1979) was an 16-hands-high Irish thoroughbred racehorse. He is pictured here winning the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot in 1958 by three lengths and was retired at the end of that season. He ran in 17 races, winning 8 of them, including the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and the St Leger Stakes and held the record for the highest earnings of a British or Irish racehorse until 1963.
In 1961 the London & North Eastern Railway named a locomotive after him.
Kenneth Rowntree (1915 – 1997) met Eric Ravilious and Edward Bawden at The Slade School of Fine Art and lived in Great Bardfield from 1942 – 1949.
