By the Sea Oil on board 1929-30 by Edward Bawden
With a heatwave seemingly lodged over this part of England, our thoughts naturally turn towards the sea. In this rare oil painting by Edward Bawden, he revisits his childhood when his family spent its summer holidays at Clacton-on-Sea in Essex.
The excitement and gaiety of seaside revellers is joyfully captured in this work, which shares an aesthetic language with Edward’s great friend Eric Ravilious, and is infused with Edward’s sense of humour and observation.
