A Snowy Day by Edward Bawden watercolour & gouache 1955
The weather warnings for snow and ice at the start of 2026 could equally apply to Great Bardfield in January 1955, at the start of what became known as ‘Britain’s big freeze’. Looking out across and down the High Street from the front windows of Brick House, Edward Bawden captured the scene as people went about their daily business in the face of falling snow. The view remains pretty much unchanged today, save that the house next to the archway has become an estate agent’s office, and the street is now full of parked cars.
A Happy New Year to all our members and visitors, and we look forward to welcoming you back to the gallery when we re-open on Sunday April 5th.
