Quatrefoil and Swan and Grass Wallpapers, designed by Edward Bawden
The Great Bardfield artists both undertook commissions to design patterned wallpapers, and liked to decorate their homes with them. Examples of these wallpapers feature prominently in our forthcoming exhibition ‘Finding a Home at the Fry’, curated by Ella Ravilious to mark the gallery’s 40th anniversary.
Edward Bawden’s designs were often witty and playful. He used them to decorate his own home, Brick House, and they could be found in other artists’ houses. These two examples were both manufactured by Cole & sons in the 1950s, using designs from the late 1930s originally produced under the ‘Bardfield Wallpapers’ collaboration with John Aldridge.
