A merry Christmas to you all Print by Bernard Cheese c.1958

Bernard Cheese was born in Sydenham, London, in 1925. He studied at Beckenham School of Art and, following four years in the army, studied at the Royal College of Art from 1947, in London, where he studied alongside Walter Hoyle and Sheila Robinson, and his teachers included Edward Bawden and Edwin La Dell.

Having worked with his first wife Sheila Robinson on murals with Edward Bawden at the 1951 Festival of Britain, the couple moved to Great Bardfield. Bernard exhibited there in the ‘open house’ exhibitions. After his separation from Sheila, Bernard continued to live nearby at Stisted.

Although addressed ‘to all’, this card was most likely sent to Marianne Straub, since she pasted it into her scrapbook of cards and cuttings from the 1950s, which is now in the collection at the Fry Art Gallery.
