Lino print on paper, 1950
A typically ebullient and Bardfield-themed picture this month from Edward Bawden. As well as showing off Bawden’s graphical skill, the print demonstrates how he used a simple colour palette to bring an image to life. This seasonal linocut ended up in the Fry Gallery collection by way of Sheila Robinson, to whom it was given by Bawden. It was in turn inherited by Sheila’s son Ben. The Fry bought the picture from Ben’s widow in 2001 with assistance from the Resource/V&A Purchase Fund.
