Using a mixture of drawing, paint, and collage to create work inspired by visiting the current exhibition,
Fry’s Popular Delights at The Fry Art Gallery.
To begin the day we shall visit the exhibition with sketchbooks in hand to experience the exuberance, colour, style and content of the work on display in this show. Each participant in the workshop can find the images which most inspire them and make notes with quick sketches to refer back to later.
In our workshop we will have prepared a still life which will include some Staffordshire figures flowers, jugs and textiles.
However, in this workshop Chloe would like participants to include elements from their imagination and past experiences (think of Olive Cook and Chagall) combined with the still life on the table and inspiration from the exhibition. Elements which can be as simple as a roughly-drawn figure or a landscape through a window.
The way each participant chooses to put everything together will be personal as simple or as complex as they please.
In the morning we will start with some line work, discussion, and experimentation with the mix of collage and drawing. Chloe will show some of her own work which often mixes everyday objects with others of a more traditional style and beauty.
After lunch everyone will settle down to produce a final image which balances collage and drawing. If people want to bring a still life object from home to add to their composition please do so.
At the end of the day we will review the work together.
This is intended to be a friendly and non-competitive process and should suit all abilities.
Some collage materials, paint and pencils will be available for general use.
