A further chance to see Margy Kinmonth’s compelling account of the life and career of Eric Ravilious on the big screen. Picturehouse is showing the film across 22 of its cinemas nationwide on 2 September 2024, with Q&A screenings.
Ai Weiwei, Grayson Perry, Alan Bennett and Robert Macfarlane contribute to recounting a life as compelling and enigmatic as his art, set against the dramatic wartime locations that inspired him.
This true story is told in Ravilious’s own words drawn from a treasure trove of private correspondence and previously unseen family photos and archive. Written, produced & directed by Margy Kinmonth for Foxtrot Films, the film also stars Freddie Fox, Tamsin Greig, Jeremy Irons and Harriet Walter.
Writer/Director/Producer Margy Kinmonth, a BAFTA and RTS Award winner and known for such work as Naked Hollywood, Royal Paintbox and Revolution – New Art for a New World, says: “As a filmmaker and artist myself, I am telling the story of an artist whose life was cut short by conflict.
Today the world is once again at war, so his story could not be more poignant and timely.
Kinmonth also wanted to pay tribute to Ravilious’s talented wife Tirzah Garwood with the film – “I want to bring out the stories of female artists too. They often get left out of the picture and in the course of history their legacies get lost or disappear completely. I used Tirzah’s wartime autobiography for my screenplay, bringing a female perspective to the story. In fact, her example was one of the inspirations behind my forthcoming new film “War Paint – Women At War”, which tells the story of female war artists, past and present.
