The Farmyard watercolour by Edward Bawden 1950. A design for a tapestry for the Edinburgh Weavers Ltd.

Difficult to pigeon-hole precisely, Popular Art is a non-academic, non-fine art with bold visual impact, jolly and decorative. Posters, prints, wallpaper, shadow boxes, cast-iron garden benches and Staffordshire figures all fall under the umbrella of Popular Art.

Artists in the Fry’s permanent collection worked as designers, and popular art themes are at the heart of their practice. The Fry has been fortunate this season to borrow additional treasures from museums, the artists’ families and private collections which all add to the range and the fun!
Boldly papered walls and a buoyant collection of works will bring the Gallery back to life this spring. The energy-giving richness of orange and vermilion proliferate unintentionally across our selection of artworks – we hope it will excite the eye and delight the soul.

Fry’s Popular Delights curated by Mark Hearld and Colin Wilkin, runs throughout the season in the Main Gallery from Sunday 5th April until Sunday 25th October.
