This exhibition in the newly expanded gallery draws entirely from the North West Essex Permanent Collection and is designed to show the sustained breadth and depth of the Collection over the 37 years since the formation of the Fry Art Gallery, and now numbering over three thousand items, constantly refreshed by new acquisitions and research. It celebrates the particular strength of the Great Bardfield artists Ravilious, Bawden, Rothenstein and Aldridge and extending to Vaughan, Ayrton and Colquhoun and MacBryde and many other artists less often shown.
Displayed on the walls and showcases alongside are sculpture, scrapbooks, sketchbooks, letters, photographs ephemera and ceramics, including recently acquired work by Gillian Lowndes, Ian Auld and Dan Arbeid, three ground-breaking potters living around Saffron Walden between 1960 and 1980.
Much of the Collection has been acquired by the generous support of the artists and their families and estates, members of the Society and art trust funds.
