Dan Arbeid, defined by Tony Birks as 'undoubtedly one of the most important potters of the last 100 years', lived in Wendens Ambo, near Saffron Walden for 20 years from 1963. As a member of staff at the Central School of Arts and Crafts from 1957 until the mid-1980s he was able to combine working with teaching. Students were also encouraged to visit Wendens Ambo at weekends to experiment with raku and salt flaming furnaces freed from the restrictions that prevented this in London.
