Wood Engraving Workshop, led by Anne Desmet R.A.

Learn the art of wood engraving from a recognised expert in the field. As well as demonstrating the methods and tools for fine line engraving on end-grain boxwood and lemonwood blocks, Desmet will teach the art of handburnishing engraved blocks on Japanese and European papers. This one-day course is aimed at those with no previous experience of wood engraving. Experience of other techniques of printmaking may be helpful but is certainly not essential. The materials provided include one wood-block. Additional blocks may be purchased on the day for £2.50.

Anne Desmet RA studied at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art, Oxford University (MA Oxon); and London's Central School of Art and Design. She was awarded a Printmaking Scholarship at the British School at Rome in 1989, is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers and a Member of the Society of Wood Engravers. Desmet is a specialist in wood engraving, linocuts and mixed media collage. She has achieved 40 national and international awards; has had over 30 solo exhibitions including several Museum Retrospectives in Britain and in Moscow; and is represented in museum collections worldwide. She is only the third artist ever elected a Royal Academician for wood engraving in the RA's 250-year history and in 2018 was elected an Honorary Fellow of Worcester College Oxford for her 'distinction in the world of art'. She has taught wood engraving at print workshops throughout the UK for many years, both to beginners and to those with some experience.
